ENGL 189 The American Experience in Literature

A historical survey of the major literary genres from the colonial to the contemporary period emphasizing the persistent thematics of the American experience from a cross-cultural perspective. This class is particularly suited for students interested in the ways in which well-known American authors are in conversation with African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos/as, and white women, who, until recently, had been left out of the literary canon. Open only to first year students. ENGL 189 satisfies an equivalent requirement to ENGL 289 within the English major. Students may not receive credit for both ENGL 189 and ENGL 289.
