CHIN 338 Literature of China's Tang and Song Dynasty

This course introduces the major genres and authors of the Tang and Song Dynasty (618-1279), generally acknowledged to be the greatest ages of shi and ci poetry and the emergence of literati culture. It will focus primarily on the art of poetry, as well as some other cultural forms such as painting and calligraphy, with attention to relevant historical, biographical, and literary-historical contexts. This class will meet with CSLC 253 twice a week, and meet for an additional 85-minute session weekly to discuss the material in the Chinese original. Primary texts are  in Classical Chinese, so proficiency in reading Chinese is required. Students completing the paper in this course with a grade of C or higher can use this work to satisfy the Second-Stage Writing Requirement.
