PHIL 340 Evidence, Reasoning, Science, and Truth

This course examines what science is and how science works. That we have clear and determinate answers to questions about the nature of evidence, reasoning and truth is assumed by the scientific enterprise, while philosophical examination shows these assumptions to be far from justified. By exploring the concept of evidence, the concept of truth, and the practices of reasoning in science, the course will analyze under just which conditions scientific claims are justified and what this means about the relation between scientific theorizing and truth.
