MUSC 101 Music Theory I

This course begins the music theory sequence by covering the techniques of music for the student who has little or no previous musical training. Topics will include notation, melody, harmony, rhythm, meter, key, scales, modes, intervals, triads, seventh chords, and structural elements of music. Introductory exercises in composition of popular, jazz, and classical genres will be explored. The music studied will be chosen in collaboration with students and Music Department colleagues. Successful completion of the Music Theory Placement Exam may allow students to pass directly into MUSC 151: Music Theory II.
