SPAN 321 Spanish Culture during Francoism

This course will examine culture and society in Spain under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939-1975) and the effects of Francoism that continue to pervade present day Spanish society. We will focus on cultural productions (literature, film, television, propaganda posters, etc.) that illustrate socio-historical, political, and economic experiences during the most important chapter of 20th century Spain. In addition, we will examine cultural products created in the 20thand 21st centuries that represent the Francoist dictatorship to enable us to analyze the legacy of the historical trauma of Francoism in present day Spain. Topics to be discussed will include: ideological struggles, censorship, the oppression of women and other minority groups, the experience of exile, and the controversial process of historical/collective memory in contemporary Spain.
