DWA 295 Topics in Diplomacy and World Affairs

Topics vary semester to semester.

Biden Foreign Policy

The course will begin by examining President Trump's America First foreign policy and assessing the effects of Trump's disdain for traditional diplomacy on America's standing in the world. We will consider what elements of Trump foreign policy President Biden has kept--and where he has made significant changes. In particular, we will analyze how President Biden and his diplomatic and security team have responded to major global challenges: the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a rising and assertive China, the ongoing nuclear threat from North Korea, the spread of populist authoritarian regimes in Europe, Latin America and Africa, a changing Middle East, immigration from Central America, and the ongoing effects of climate change. Students will write policy memos critically assessing Biden's policies and considering options for the future.
