DWA 360 Who Develops? Research and Policy Making in International Development
This course provides an overview of existing scholarship on international development with a focus on two sets of actors: policy-makers and the targets of development policies. It familiarizes students with the traditional theories of development and more recent critiques emerging from scholars of the global south. It also provides a historical contextualization of what precipitated trends in the development world, leading from theories to implementable policies. It addresses the many challenges that the global community faces in its efforts to reduce poverty in an equitable and sustainable manner. Finally, it promotes a multifaceted understanding of development that moves beyond economic poverty to focusing on health and education outcomes while also understanding how existing inequities can obstruct the efficient implementation of development policies.
