SPAN 372 Port Cities: Latin American Narratives, Connections and (Dis)Encounters
This course includes the study of Latin American fiction dealing with representations of port cities (Callao, Valparaíso, Guayaquil, Buenaventura, etc.) and topics that range from labor movements, migration and economic struggles, gender, and ethnic tensions from the twentieth century. The narratives reflect the forces at play resulting in human exploitation, ecological devastation, and social stagnation present since the republican era. The course will explore modes of illustrating resistance, survival, and adaptation.
