THEA 101 From Page to Stage: Introduction to Reading and Writing for Performance
In this course, students engage with the art of reading and writing theatrical scripts. By exploring the essentials of drama - characters in conflict, compelling language, resonant thematics, and bold theatricality - we investigate the elusive relationship between a play's text and its ultimate destination: the live stage. The class begins by analyzing established scripts and ends with students creating their own. Along the way, we'll discover the rule and rule-breaking techniques playwrights use, helping us to unlock the performative potential of their work and ours. The semester culminates with each student writing an original short play.
