DWA 210 Politics of Russia and Eurasia

This course introduces students to the history, politics, and international context of Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union. The course focuses on the political and economic transformation in post-communist Eurasia after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. We investigate the nature of domestic political systems of post-Soviet state, state-society relations, ethnic conflict, politics of economic reform, and the underpinnings of foreign policy-making in these countries. Students will learn about the region using the comparative method by engaging in reading and writing assignments that will require comparing outcomes of student’s choice both cross-nationally or temporally.
