EDUC 143 Art Education Practicum: Community Studio at OXY ARTS

This an interdisciplinary course providing an introductory overview of public engagement through the lens of art. Students will learn basic methodologies of public engagement; how to create an inquiry-based lesson plan with an emphasis on creative expression; and how to lead a group of elementary or middle school students, with priority placed on collaboration and art-making.

During the first six weeks of the semester, students will research, plan and work with lead teaching artist Patricia Yossen and collaborate in teaching teams to develop lesson plans for an original after school art workshop for local youth. In the following 6 weeks of the semester, Oxy students will collaboratively lead their workshops for local elementary or middle school youth, culminating in a final public presentation at the Oxy Arts gallery. This course is an eligibility requirement to apply for a paid student work position through Oxy Arts to lead after school art classes on-site at local Highland Park elementary schools. You are required to submit an application to register for this class. You will be notified if you're accepted into the course before registration week. Permission of Oxy Arts Director Required.
