ENGL 381 Experimental Life Writing

This course invites students to explore avant-garde and alternative prose practices to investigate the qualities of writing “without invention.” We will experiment with varied prose styles to tell stories that are activated by the recollections of our real lives. These new writings will emphasize journaling, lyric essay, hybrid memoir, autofiction, biomythography, and visual storytelling. We will encounter texts by contemporary writers who actively engage in personal and social worlds through the art of story, including Brontez Purnell, Eileen Myles, Anthony Veasna So, Audre Lorde, Alison Bechdel, Kayleb Rae Candrilli, and others. Students will have the opportunity to participate in author-focused workshops as part of developing their writing practices.
