This course provides an introduction to a broad range of approaches and methodologies used in
the interdisciplinary fields of Gender and Ethnic Studies. These methods include (but are not
limited to) archival and historical research, textual analysis, fieldwork, action research and visual
analysis. We will learn about these methodological approaches along with the foundational goals
and theoretical discussions of fields such as Latina/o Studies, Sociology, Cultural Studies and
Gender Studies to conceptualize and locate our research projects within the different disciplinary
fields that inform our scholarship. The course also considers what constitutes interdisciplinary
research and how we can implement it in our own practice. Throughout the semester students
will develop an original research proposal and conduct preliminary research by creating a corpus
of textual and visual data.
