MUSC 101 Music Theory I

This course begins the music theory sequence by covering the basic techniques of music, and is designed for both students with no previous musical training and students with substantial performance experience. Topics will include notation, melody, harmony, rhythm, meter, key, scales, modes, intervals, triads, seventh chords, and structural elements of music. Introductory exercises in composition of popular, jazz, and classical genres will be explored. The music studied will be chosen in collaboration with students and Music Department colleagues. This course includes both a lecture and a lab section, which focuses on developing listening and musicianship skills. Successful completion of the Music Theory Placement Exam may allow students to pass directly into MUSC 151 Music Theory II.

Students enrolled in MUSC 101 must be co-enrolled in a section of MUSC 101A.
