MUSC 245 Introduction to the Music Industry

In this course, students learn how to execute the fundamental aspects of creating a successful music project within the music entertainment industry. Students will work in groups to create artist profiles and business plans, which they will then execute online, by way of digital service providers such as Bandcamp and Spotify, and offline, through methods such as networking, live performance, and industry events. By fashioning distinctive artist identities, students will learn how to formulate an artist brand, including name, style, biography, and intent. They will learn how to market these projects and conduct cost-benefit analyses as they develop business plans which may include frameworks for radio, publicity, distribution, licensing, and synching. The goal of the course is to have students acquire the tools to advance their own careers along their chosen music industry path.
