RELS 257 The Past, Present, and Politics of Antisemitism
Our course will examine the history of antisemitism from late antiquity to the present. We will investigate the historical differences and continuities between anti-Judaism and antisemitism, and problematize their ahistorical conflation with anti-Zionism. Leaning on this long history, we will examine the conditions under which various historical actors articulate, proclaim, and contest claims of antisemitism, rather than assuming its universal definition. We will also take an intersectional approach to understanding the ways in which antisemitism connects with racism and Islamophobia. By the end of the course, students will be able to open up conversations about antisemitism, understand it relationally with other forms of hatred, and identify how it might be instrumentalized in contemporary political discourses.
