SOC 218 Black Ecological Thought

Over fifty years ago, the first person in the U.S. hired to coordinate a Black Studies program, Nathan Hare (1970), published an essay titled, ‘‘Black Ecology,’’ in which he argued that it was imperative that we come to ‘‘understand how both the physical and social environments of blacks and whites have increasingly evolved as contrast.’’ Since then, many scholars from across the social sciences and humanities have contributed to this endeavor. This emergent field of Black ecological thought is important because it provides insight about race and the environment from the perspective of Black study. In this survey course, we will study a range of black ecological thinkers and the concepts that they offer for understanding contemporary environmental issues.
