THEA 260 Teaching Artist Practicum in Local Elementary Schools

This course is a community engaged course - One of two separate applied workshops in teaching theater and performance in public schools that focus on classroom management and education with elementary school children. We study age-appropriate methods of integrating theater into the elementary school curriculum. Students may take 260 and 261 in either order. In four intensive sessions, students learn five workshops geared to the third grade after which, under the instructor's supervision, they guide two local elementary school classes through the curriculum. Preferably, the students in the course will have taken at least THEA110 because part of teaching theater to students is to co-create and perform with them, using one's artistic tools and techniques to teach the students how to embrace their creativity. Students will develop proficiency in being a teaching artist, which in itself is a creative practice that fuses pedagogy with performance. Students will develop their voices as teaching artists, a skill they can apply in their own creative practice and is translatable into other areas. Enrollment is limited.
