COGS 330 Linguistics as a Cognitive Science

Linguistics is the study of language; cognitive science is the study of cognition. How can we combine their resources to help us understand the human cognitive ability to use language? In this class we will approach this question by asking how to think about language from the perspective of cognitive science: What conceptual frameworks are appropriate to use to understand language in this way? What can we distinctively learn about language, and about cognition, from this perspective? What theoretical assumptions are we making about language and cognition when we approach language from this perspective, and what is the rationale for those assumptions?
