Indigenous or Native feminism course will be guided by the relationship between body, mind, and spirit in and outside the classroom. In this course, we will learn from Indigenous feminism frameworks, from reciprocity to body-territory to Buen Vivir (Good Living). These frameworks share the ontological premise that humans are connected to Mother Earth, and we cannot separate the body and mind from the land. Inspired by Potawatomi botanist and author Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book Braiding Sweet Grass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants, the class will also share a relationship with herbs, plants, and the spiritual world. Questions the class asks: How can a body, mind, and spirit epistemology in the classroom transform student and teacher relationships to center communal healing? How does an engaged pedagogy challenge Western education values of individualism and meritocracy?
