JAPN 460 Seminar in Japanese Studies

This advanced-level course offers an in-depth exploration of theories and practices of Japanese studies, including linguistics and translational studies, cultural and historical inquiries, and literary studies. Through a variety of primary sources in Japanese and secondary scholarship in both English and Japanese, we will discuss critical inquiries of Japan’s social and cultural life. We will also integrate Japanese skills of reading, writing, and comprehending to formulate individual ideas and critiques, as well as express them in formal essays and presentations.


This course is open to both non-native and native speakers of Japanese who wish to develop their bilingual skills and intercultural literacy. Class discussions will be conducted in both Japanese and English.
