PHIL 324 Daoism: The Unhewn Block

The philosophical texts of Daoism prize simplicity and naturalness, as exhibited in the metaphor of the unhewn block. This course will explore philosophical themes in Daoism, including transformation and the cycles of nature, the distinctions between humans and nature, how the Daoist ruler governs, and the limits of knowledge and language. The course will also discuss Daoist religious movements that build on these foundational texts and ideas.
