SOC 200 Classical Sociological Theory: Marx, Weber, Durkheim

The course is on sociology’s formative schools of thought. Karl Marx, Max Weber and Emile Durkheim not only founded the field of Sociology in the 19th century, their theories continue to influence contemporary thought about social relations. Through lecture and discussion we examine their general theories before we critically evaluate their concrete claims about capitalist development or “modernization,” the state, social science and social change. Learning Outcomes: Students will learn to critically evaluate the theoretical propositions of thinkers in the field. They will also write papers that articulate an original thesis with supporting evidence.
