ARTS 290 Art Outside the Bounds: Fiber Art + Community

Art Outside the Bounds: Fiber Art + Community Studio Art Class
In this hands-on studio class centered around textile and fiber processes, students will explore the different ways that they can use textile arts in solidarity with social justice movements. Using macrame, felting, and other fiber arts techniques, the course will delve into and expand on visiting Wanlass artist Tanya Aguiniga's Community Engagement Methodologies which include working with traditional craft materials to create sculptures, installations, performances, and community-based art projects. Students will also engage with and collaborate with local community organizers. At the end of the course, students will develop a new set of skills and new material vocabulary to create a collective toolkit of best practices in working with the community based on our semesters' visits, research and individual material explorations. No prior fiber art experience is required.
