SOC 253 Immigrant Youth in the United States
In this course, we will examine the lives of 1.5 and second generation immigrant youth in the United States since the 1920s, with particular attention on identity formation and youth cultures in the present day. Throughout the semester, students will read empirical studies about immigrant youth with cultural ties to numerous countries, especially countries in the Americas and Asia. Students will learn about: (1) the theories of acculturation and assimilation sociologists use to analyze the experiences of immigrant youth; (2) immigrant youth from different immigrant communities; (3) how geographical location, social class, gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, immigration status, popular culture, mass media, and technology inform the identity construction of immigrant youth. Students will write papers that articulate an original thesis with supporting evidence.
