SOC 220 Inequalities in Health and Healthcare

This course examines the social, economic, and political factors that contribute to unequal health outcomes across different populations. Through a sociological lens, students will explore how race, class, gender, geography, and other social determinants shape access to healthcare, health behaviors, and overall well-being. The course will analyze structural inequalities, such as systemic racism and economic inequality, as well as policies and practices that perpetuate health disparities. Case studies and contemporary examples, including the COVID-19 pandemic, will be used to understand how power and privilege influence health outcomes globally and locally. Students will engage in critical discussions on potential solutions, emphasizing equity-focused interventions and public health strategies. By the end of the course, students will be equipped to analyze health disparities and advocate for more just and inclusive health systems.
