FYS 12 Rescued Books Club: Novels from the New York Review of Books Classics Series
The New York Review of Books Classics series is dedicating to reviving literary works that have fallen out of print and into relative obscurity. This course is for students interested in exploring this series, with a focus on three of the great, lesser-known short novels of the 20th century: Jean Stafford’s The Mountain Lion (US, 1947), Natsume Soseki’s The Gate (Japan, 1910), and Barbara Pym’s The Sweet Dove Died (UK, 1978). In studying these distinctive works, students will develop their close reading skills, engage with literary scholarship, and write their own original, thesis-driven essays while strengthening and sharpening both their analytical prowess and prose style.
Open only to first-year frosh.
