Transfer Credit Policies

When judging whether a course taken at another institution can count as an Oxy Religious Studies course, we look for two things:

That the course takes the same approach to the study of religion as our department—aligning with our intellectual commitments, and our learning goals & outcomes.

That the course requires the same disciplinary standards for the study of religion as courses in our department, in terms of high-quality and amount of readings, quality and amount of assignments, etc.

For our RELS Major/Minor and RELS + X Major, the Department will allow for courses from other departments on campus, transfer courses, and courses from study abroad to count towards the major/minor. Students should petition the Department by writing to the Chair and explaining why these courses should count towards the major/minor with copies of relevant syllabi. These courses should incorporate evidence of disciplinary standards in the study of religion. Accepting these courses for credit towards the major/minor will be at the discretion of the department.

We accept Transfer Credit for online courses. Students should petition the Department by writing to the Chair and explaining why these courses should count towards the major/minor with copies of relevant syllabi. These courses should incorporate evidence of disciplinary standards in the study of religion. Accepting these courses for credit towards the major/minor will be at the discretion of the department.

Otherwise, the Religious Studies Department policy on transfer credit conforms to College policy. Students should reference the Transfer Credit section for details.
