CSP 52 Decolonizing Nature: the Politics of Ecology

Environmentalism and environmental advocacy has historically been dominated by middle to upper middle class, white advocates and thinkers. This course will deconstruct the western, anthropocentric view of environmentalism and explore other, non-western, non-white concepts of environmentalism and nature. The course will focus on three primary texts: Decolonizing Nature: Contemporary Arts and the Politics of Ecology, The Great Derangement, and Race and Nature: from Transcendentalism to the Harlem Renaissance.
