CSP 66 American Indians and the Urban Diaspora

This course introduces students to the major themes and comparative categories in the study of peoples indigenous to North America through the use of field trips, theory, case studies, ethnography, film, and literature. Course materials emphasize native voices in academic and literary work. Topics include popular representations of Native Americans, problems in research on indigenous peoples, the development of pan-Indian religions, and the impact of the diaspora of over 70% of native people to urban areas in North America. Attention will also be given to contemporary issues in Urban Indian life and cultural renewal as expressed at Pow-wows, and in protest, literature, and art.
