FYS 54 Prison Abolition

This course will explore philosophical arguments about the justification (or lack thereof) for state institutions of punishment, with a special focus on Angela Davis's prison abolitionism. Students will apply these arguments in their research projects to contemporary activist movements, including those to defund the police, to abolish ICE, to eliminate bail, and to reform parole.
