FYS 78 Writing the Self: Truth on the Margins of Memory

“The self is a dialogue between several independent melodies or voices. It emerges in the process of writing when I derive meaning from the events that are happening with me and around me. This process is intimately connected with memory, and could also be called the process of unforgetting.” In this course we will examine the claims made in the preceding sentences by discussing the texts of philosophers and writers from Central and Eastern Europe. We will also experiment with writing our own self. Potential authors include Bakhtin, Mamardashvili, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Schulz, Tsvetaeva, Ginzburg, Nabokov, Miłosz, Zhadan, Kurkov, Kamysh.
