FYS 21 Rhetorical Agency and Cultural Production from the Asian Diaspora

This seminar will explore critical theories of education, particularly within critical race studies and a focus on Asian Pacific Americans students in the U.S. Students will reflect on their own identity formation within the context of their learning, conduct critical analyses of arguments on current topics on education, and engage with the scholarship in critical race studies and education. Through reading, writing, and critical discussion, students will analyze the model minority myth and critically discuss how Asian/Asian Pacific Americans have historically been represented in the U.S. imaginary and in educational discourse. Some questions our class will explore include: What factors contribute to historically marginalized Asian Pacific American students' educational achievement? How can critical race theory be used as a lens to assess inequities in education? Open only to first year frosh.
