FYS 54 Navigating the Global Energy Revolution
This course explores the complex interplay between politics, economics, and the energy sector as nations and regions transition toward sustainable and renewable power sources. We will examine the history and evolution of global energy systems; the role of states and markets in shaping energy policy; technological innovations driving energy transitions; the geopolitics of energy; and the environmental and social implications of these transitions. To complement our theoretical studies, we will engage in mandatory field trips to Power Plant One, the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator, and the Port of Los Angeles, offering firsthand insights into how these local entities contribute to and are impacted by global energy trends. Open to first-year frosh only.
