Los Angeles is not only an urban city rich in cultural diversity, but it is also located within a geographic area of remarkable biodiversity- the California Floristic Province. With a focus on LA and California ecosystems, you will understand the importance of biodiversity, threats to biodiversity, and potential solutions for conservation. You will also learn about the importance of Indigenous knowledge and practices to incorporate Indigenous knowledge into conservation strategies with an emphasis on interpreting scientific evidence. We will have an additional lab period (W 12:50-1:45) and two mandatory Saturday field trips to enhance your understanding of these principles and gain field experience with a focus on the history and natural history of the Arroyo Seco/ LA River. Ultimately, you will be able to communicate scientific concepts and evidence, and argue for solutions to biodiversity loss to a general audience. Open to first-year frosh only.
