FYS 70 Photography, Film and Surrealism
This course will introduce students to the literature, photography and film produced by the artists and writers associated with the surrealist movement between 1924 and 1945. After World War I (1914-18), these artists critiqued the war's destruction by actively promoting images of fragmentation, dismemberment, distortion and transformation. Fighting against a "return to order," they aimed to upend traditional bourgeois culture and its ideas about family, country, religion and sexuality. We will also explore how surrealist creative work continues to inspire contemporary artists and filmmakers. One field trip, plus two evening or weekend film screenings required. Open to first-year frosh only.
